a beautiful scene
There is a Daft Punk concert at Keyspan Park in Brooklyn coming up we are all very excited about. I haven't seen Daft Punk since Twilo in the late nighties. A mix of that concert has surfaced in several places but I first saw it on the brilliant, cool hometaping.org. That concert sort of functions as a book end to a strange time in my life, a month later and unfortunately helped by nasty black ice on the road, I totaled my car in Storrow Drive almost killing myself. I remember the distinct clinical smell of the airbag deploying and that Homework was playing during the accident. Not good. Among the many thoughts crossing my mind at the time were "I almost died" and "I'm going to have to buy this CD again tomorrow"
I love this band unrepentantly: unmade, unhelmeted, unproduced, whatever. So, a week or so before this concert, it was exciting to see on the music thing blog (via Erol Alkan's forum) a look at their set-up, the pyramid:

So there are four, 4, cuatro Moog Voyagers on that photo. I got to carry one of those while giving a hand to ex-Cure Rodger O'Donnell when he was in town (they are heavy). Those Moog filters are some of the most beautiful sound making devices I've had the pleasure of experiencing. In a world of Ableton Live and Serato, experiencing Live Synthesis is a fairly rare occurrence, as rare as a pop star singing in the proper pitch.
Anyways, I am getting closer to the photo nugget of this post and that is that while searching for more Daft Punk photos I came across Hedi Slimane's flickr account. I was as surprised as anybody. As somebody who sorts-of-follows fashion from little pedestrian Boston, Hedi's work for Dior Homme was just uncanny (upon showing these photos to a friend photographer he referred to Hedi as "that gay designer who was in the New Yorker a few years ago" hmmm yes This is Boston Not LA). I've seen Slimane's photos in traditional photobook format but to see them in flickr is something else. Here is the selection that shows the incredibly talented Pete Doherty from the Libertines, sometime before or in the middle of all of this happening:
There are other fashion sets in there with photos from Avedon, Inez and Vinoodh, David Sims. Really good work.

lazy
I've been avoiding photography like the plague, ironically even when I now carry with me two cameras at all times. Don't ask. I just don't have it in me and every project I have is still in its conceptual phase. Also, I'm not interested in party photography -- to be honest at those occasions I'd rather hold a greyhound on my hand. God bless the people who do it in Boston though (Check David Day) Anyway, meanwhile waiting for photo Godot I've been shooting 6x7 on a borrowed Fuji Rangefinder (Fuji GSW690III -- "Texas Leica"). I just contradicted myself but trust me I have not, it's all been haphazard shooting without digging too deep. But finally last week I broke the 5D and headed out to the Middlesex lounge to go see Raster-Noton courtesy of Susanna from Non-Event. To quote Unlocked Groove/Make It New Selekta Alan Manzi, "these cats are loud". Fuck yeah they were, never heard sine waves that loud in my life. It was great.
